Inception

Inception has held onto the top spot at the American box office.

Christopher Nolan's latest movie took a further $43,5 million to comfortably hold off competition from Angelina Jolie's Salt, which had to settle for second.

Inception sees Nolan return to the director's chair for the first time in two years and team up with Leonardo DiCaprio. The film, which has also been a hit with the critics, has now grossed over $226.6 million at the global box office so far.

Angelina Jolie has not been seen on the big screen since Changeling and Wanted back in 2008 but has returned this summer in action thriller Salt.

As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honour and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy.

Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who is Salt?"

Despicable Me has dropped a single place from two to three while The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Toy Story 3 also fell one place a piece to four and five.

The only other new entry inside this week's top ten came in the form of Ramona and Beezus as it opened at number six.

This week's biggest faller was The Twilight Saga: Eclipse as it dropped four places from four to eight. There was a two place drop for The Last Airbender while Predators also fell two place to round off the top ten.
