Hugh Jackman reveals that he enjoyed showing the physical transformation of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables because it is something that cannot be done on stage.
The actor lost a lot of weight for the beginning of the movie where his character is a prisoner only to pile it all back on again for later in the movie.
Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "Tom wanted me to be unrecognisable at the beginning, which is an important story point. But what you can do on film, which you can't do on stage, is show time, show the expanse of time and transformation in the character.
"And he has an incredible internal transformation as a character, but also an external one.
"He starts as a prisoner filled of hate, and even though he's strong, he's obviously emaciated and treated badly, so head shaved and long beard.
"So we went for it, I lost a lot of weight, and then from day one, or day three of filming, once that period was filming I got to stack it on again - which was fun."
Jackman has already picked up a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Jean Valjean and he is expected to also be amongst the Oscar nominations.
We are going to be seeing plenty of the actor on the big screen this year as he is set to appear in Movie 43 as well as star in The Wolverine.
Les Miserables is released 11th January.
