Ponyo

Ponyo

Hayao Miyazaki was inspired to make the film Ponyo by the reckless way people treat the sea.

The filmmaker returns to the director's chair this month with his new movie Ponyo, his first film since the Academy Award nominated Howl's Moving Castle.

Ponyo follows a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human.

Speaking to Total Film the director said: "For this film, I loved alone for about two months near the sea to prepare. I stayed on top of a cliff in a very old house - the kind that might have ghosts!

"It was a very interesting experience. I couldn’t believe how people would trash the sea. It was just reckless - a complete lack of respect.

"It’s all reflected in the film. There is more garbage in the fishing boats’ nets than fish! Then what do they do after they collect the garbage? They’d dump it back in."

Studio Ghibli is one of the biggest animation studios in the world producing movies such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke over the last twenty five years.

Ponyo is released 12th February.
