Gwyneth Paltrow admitted that she struggled getting her head around addiction.
The Oscar winning actress is back on the big screen in the new year in her latest movie Country Strong, in which she plays a washed up country singer who is struggling with her demons.
But Paltrow admits that understanding addiction and the devastating impact that it has on the person and the people around them was difficult to grasp.
Speaking to Reuters the actress said: "I just couldn't understand how you could be so drunk that you could wreck people's lives and then wake up the next day and pretend everything was fine.
"I struggled with that."
Paltrow has already had box office success this year as she returned to the role of Pepper Potts in Iron Man 2, which was a bigger hit that it's predecessor.
She is currently filming Contagion, which also stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard and Kate Winslet.
Country Strong is released 4th March 2011.
