Gwyneth Paltrow has explained her overly emotional Oscars speech when she picked up a Best Actress trophy in 1999 - her beloved grandfather was seriously ill.
The actress was handed the coveted prize for her role in Shakespeare In Love and she stunned the audience by bursting into tears and sobbing on stage.
Paltrow's sick grandfather was sitting in the audience to watch her pick up the trophy and he passed away not long after the ceremony - and the actress admits his illness tinged her big night with sadness.
She tells CNN, "It was his last night out before he died. I just thought it was like an out-of-body experience...
"I was so emotional and proud because I knew it was his last night out."
And Paltrow is back on the big screen later this year with her new movie Country Strong, in which she plays up a washed up country singer who has one last stab at the big time.
