Guy Ritchie says it was an 'easy choice' to return for a second Sherlock Holmes movie.
Ritchie is back in the director's chair for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which also sees Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law return to the roles of Holmes and Dr Watson.
Speaking to USA Today the British filmmaker said: "I can't help myself. They wanted this to be a franchise, which, in my mind, needs at least two movies.
"But I really liked working with the team on the first movie, so this was an easy choice."
As well as recurring characters there are also some new faces on the cast list - including Jared Harris who takes on the role of Moriarty.
And Ritchie had nothing but praise for the actor and his depiction of the legendary villain.
"Moriarty is one of the most famous villains of all time. But we didn't want to make him a conventional character. The challenge was to still make him modern, believable.
"Jared brings a depth, a realism, that everyone was really excited about. He's very relatable."
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is released 16th December.
