Ricky Gervais will host the awards in January

The Golden Globes nominations have been announced this afternoon, with a couple of surprises and some very welcome nominations.

The King's Speech leads with seven nominations, up for Best Drama Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The Social Network and The Fighter trailed just behind with six nominations and Black Swan and Inception took four a-piece.

The King's Speech is an early front-running Oscar favourite, alongside The Fighter. Christian Bale has finally secured a Best Supporting Actor nod, which is hoped to be continued into the Oscar season.

It's worth noting that Inception and The Social Network were both summer films and are still looking to be recognised in awards season, something which often doesn't happen as they are overlooked when the top films are released in December and January.

There are some very tough categories, Best Picture could very easily go to either King's Speech or The Social Network and Best Director could go either way as well. It's unlikely that Inception will get as much of the recognition as it so deserves, but look to Best Original Score for that.

Colin Firth was nominated for his turn in A Single Man last year in the awards season but went away empty handed, so look out for him in this category this year. Best Actress could go either way, but Natalie Portman's dedication to the role could get her the Globe. Best Supporting Actor may go to Christian Bale or Andrew Garfield and Best Supporting Actress could go either way, but look out for Mila Kunis, Helena Bonham Carter or Amy Adams.

The comedy/musical categories aren't even worth a look-in with bewildering nominations for Alice In Wonderland, The Tourist and Red.

The awards ceremony will take place in January and is to be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
