Geoffrey Rush

Geoffrey Rush has revealed that he is proud to play an Australian in his new movie the King's Speech.

The actor is back on the big screen this week as he teams up with Colin Firth and director Tom Hooper to tell the story of King George VI and his struggle with a stammer.

Rush takes on the role of speech therapist Lionel Logue who helped him overcome his problem.

Speaking to MSN Movies the actor said: "I just love the idea of being able to play an Australian character in an internationally created film, because there aren't many, I don't think..."

And the actor always admits that he was keen to appear in the movie.

"I phoned my LA agent and said 'look you know about the abdication Edward VIII and the ascension to the throne of a very reluctant king', I said, 'but this story has got the most wonderful, completely unknown to me, story of his Australian speech therapist, which I had no idea about'."

2011 looks set to be a busy year for Rush as he will be returning to the character of Captain Barbosa in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

It's the fourth movie in the franchise and sees Rush reunite with Johnny Depp and is due to hit screens in November.

The King's Speech is out now.
