Gemma Arterton was drawn to her new movie The Disappearance of Alice Creed because of the dark themes in the film.
The British actress takes the central role in the J Blakeson directed movie which follows the kidnapping of a young woman.
Speaking to GQ magazine the actress said: "There was a bit of resistance from some people wondering if it was a good idea for me to do this film.
"It's quite violent, there's nudity in it, it's not a pretty film. But that's why I wanted to do it."
"It was made for under a million in a shed on the Isle of Man. Filmmaking at its purest: no money, no time, but really good actors and really good script."
However the actress likes to mix and match her roles as she takes on the blockbusters Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to make a name for herself.
"There is this realistic, business side to me and I think that it's informed my career a lot.
"You need to be known as an actress to get the really good parts, so you need to make sure you're in something that people see. Then hopefully you get the chance to have the creativity later."
