Gemma Arterton wants to be taken as a serious actress.

The British star admits that she doesn't just want to be seen as a piece of 'totty' and wants to be seen in a different light, more for her acting ability then just what she looks like.

Speaking to the Daily Mail the actress said:  "For me, it can really be frustrating when you're just seen as the totty, and I know that I've always taken acting so seriously.

"The Bond film took me into that 'hottie' category. It's easy for people to put you in that 'hot girl' slot.

"I don't want to play those characters any more. Now I'm starting to be in the kinds of films I would go and see - quirky and interesting and not particularly blockbustery.

"So I have to prove my salt. And now is the time."

Arterton is back on the big screen later this year with Tamara Drewe, which sees her team up with The Queen filmmaker Stephen Frears. And 2010 has been a busy year for the actress as she has mixed small roles with the big budget blockbusters.

Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time have been the big hit for Arterton in recent months but she went back to independent filmmaking with The Disappearance of Alice Creed.
