Gael Garcia Bernal

Gael Garcia Bernal has given up his dream of becoming a doctor - because he fears he's left it too late in life to learn the basics.

As a child actor, The Motorcycle Diaries star hoped for a medical future - and considered his drama career would be nothing but a hobby - but success in his native Mexico and then internationally meant he never had time to study.

He says, "My parents were actors and I would accompany my parents to all their plays and everything, so it would be like I was doing it without doing the acting part... I started when I was nine and there was no choice to work as an actor in a way.

"To become an actor, a professional actor, that was a choice I made, definitely but I would have been very happy to be a doctor and to act in the afternoons.

"Doctors have very little time but, to act in the afternoons in community theatre, I wouldn't mind that. That would have been fun.

"But it's too late now. It's too heavy. They (doctors) work a lot."

And 2009 is a busy year for Bernal with Mammoth, The Limits of Control and 8 all due for release this year.
