Forest Whitaker has praised the Academy Awards for continuing to show diversity in it's nominees.

The Oscar winner admits that he is glad that people of colour are being recognised for their work and called for that to continue.

Speaking to PopEater the actor said: "I think that art likes to express society and the way the world is. Hopefully that's what it's trying to do.

"I gotta be honest with you, I didn't go looking through every performance, looking at all the films that were made, maybe the ones that even I missed to be able to consider so I can't speak.

"But I know clearly over the last number of years there's been a strong representation of people of colour. Hopefully that's going to continue."

Whitaker picked up his Best actor Academy Award back in 2006 for The Last King of Scotland, in which he took on the role of Idi Amin.

The actor has already completed work on Catch.44, which sees him team up with Bruce Willis and Malin Akerman, and has A Single Shot and Little Treasure in the pipeline.
