Emma Thompson has revealed that Carey Mulligan is favourite to take on the role of Eliza Doolittle in the remake of My Fair Lady.

The Oscar winning screen writer is penning the script for the movie and at the premier of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang earlier in the week she talked about the movie's casting.

Speaking to Reuters she said: "I think Carey is set to play [her], yes."

She also revealed that she didn't know if Hugh Grant would take on the part of Professor Henry Higgins: "I love Hugh so I'd love him to do it, he might want to, he might not want to, so we don't know yet."

The movie is set to be directed by John Madden, it was offered to Danny Boyle after the success of Slumdog Millionaire.

Keira Knightley had also been linked to the project but now Mulligan, who shot to fame last year for An Education; a role which saw her receive her first Oscar nomination, is favourite for the central role.

Thompson is back on the big screen this week as the magical Nanny McPhee but won her screenplay Oscar back in 1995 for Sense and Sensibility, in which she also starred.
