Elijah Wood has called reprising his role as Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit as ‘interesting’ and ‘fitting’.

It was announced earlier this week that Wood, who led the cast of Lord of the Rings is set to reprise the role of Frodo as Peter Jackson brings The Hobbit to the big screen.

Speaking at a Television Critics Association panel, Wood said: "We thought we were finished and the character doesn't even exist in [J.R.R. Tolkien's novel] The Hobbit so it was not even a pipe dream to imagine the possibility would be there for me to reprise the role of Frodo."

"But they've come up with something that I think is kind of interesting and I think very fitting that doesn't necessarily infringe upon the integrity of the original novel."

And Wood is not the only character who is set to return as Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett will also be returning as Legolas and Gladriel.

It was revealed yesterday that Ian McKellan is also on board as Gandlaf while Andy Serkis is reprising his role ass Gollum.

The actor will be back on the big screen, his voice at least, later this year with the release of Happy Feet 2 in which he voices the character of Mumble.

The filming of The Hobbit is set to get underway in New Zealand next month.
