Edgar Ramirez says that his new movie Carlos is not about politics.
The actor takes on the role of terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez in the movie that is showing at the Cannes Film Festival this week.
Directed by Olivier Assayas the movie follows Sanchez as he founds a worldwide terrorist organization and raided the OPEC headquarters in 1975 before being caught by the French police.
Speaking at a press conference at the film festival he said: "We don't see Carlos as a political figure. He's a character who is involved in politics.
"The film refers to politics - but politics and ideology form the context of the film. Politics and ideology are the context in which the character lives, but it's not the subject of the film in my view."
"I think this is a film which talks to us about the struggle between the determination to change the world and also the obsession with carving out a place in history.
"It's a film that talks to us about the struggle between idealism and individualism. I think that these are factors which interest all of us."
