Dustin Hoffman is planning to make his directorial debut with a film adaptation of Ronald Harwood's acclaimed play Quartet.

Great Brits Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly and Tom Courtenay will star in the production, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film revolves around four ageing opera stars who are living in a retirement home.

We haven't seen Hoffman on the big screen since Little Fockers last year, although he has lent his voice to Kung Fu Panda 2.

The actor has stepped into TV and has been starring in Luck. But he has a couple of projects in the pipeline The Song of Names and Very Good Girls.
