Drew Barrymore admits that she hates the term 'celebrity' as it undermines what she has achieved as an actress.
Barrymore has enjoyed a career that has spanned over thirty years, shooting to fame in E.T., and now sees her trying her hand at directing.
In an interview with the Guardian the actress said: "When I started out I was an actor. And now when someone calls me a celebrity, I want to shoot them.
"I want to go, thank you for reducing me - I've worked for 35 years, I've killed myself to be established as someone who is responsible, reliable and accountable in my field of work, yet you're calling me a name of someone who basically got famous for no reason."
Whip It is her latest project, as well as starring in the film she also moves behind the camera for the first time, which stars Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden and Juliette Lewis.
And the actress revealed that although she was nervous about making her directorial debut she relished the challenge that lay before her.
"The scarier it is and the more anxiety you have, the better. And I know that's a stressful way to live, but anything that's too familiar means I've done it and I know I can do it.
"So I'm really about, 'What else. What next?' How can I make myself feel more terrified?"
Whip It is released 7th April.
