Kathryn Bigelow will battle it out with ex-husband James Cameron for the Director Guild Award after the nominations were revealed.
Bigelow’s war movie The Hurt Locker has been the movie to beat on the award’s circuit so far picking up gongs at the National Society of Critics awards, Golden Satellite Awards as well as picking up nominations at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards.
But she faces tough competition if she wants to take the Director’s Guild Award with Cameron, Lee Daniels, Quentin Tarantino and Jason Reitman all nominated.
Cameron’s Avatar has become the second biggest grossing movie of all time and has also been recognised at the Golden Globes with a Best Picture and Best Director nod.
Similarly causing a stir is Lee Daniel’s movie Precious, based on the novel by Sapphire, which has been grabbing headlines since it’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of 2009.
Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air, which stars George Clooney, was one of the frontrunner at the beginning of the awards season and is expected to feature heavily in the Oscar nominations.
Rounding off the Directors Guild nods is Quentin Tarantino for his movie Inglorious Basterds, which is his most financially successful film.
The winner will be announced 30th January.
