Diego Luna is stepping behind the camera to make his directorial debut with a dramatic new movie.
The Y Tu Mama Tambien actor will take charge of Abel, which is being produced by John Malkovich's compay Mr. Mudd.
The film will unravel a family drama from the perspective of a young child, and will star Luna's Just Walking co-star Jose Maria Yazpik.
Malkovich and his partners have lined up almost $3 million (GBP2 million) in funding from private investors and the Mexican state of Aguascalientes, where the movie will be shot.
Luna's first television role came in 1991 with El Último Fin de Año before going onto El Abuelo y Yo a year later.
He began mixing TV with movie work and in recent years he has appeared in the likes of Y tu mamá también with Garcia Bernal which was critically acclaimed.
He went on to land role in Frida, Open Range and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. His most recent movies include biopic Milk and Rudo y Cursi.
