Denzel Washington has revealed that it was the modern issues of his new movie Unstoppable that was a huge draw for him when he read the script.

The actor is back on the big screen this week as he reunites with filmmaker Tony Scott for the action movie. But the actor admits that it was the modern day issues of unemployment that was a big part of the story for him.

Speaking to FemaleFirst the actor said: "Absolutely, I mean especially when we got down there; it was interesting watching the news here last night and they were talking about the policemen who they were going to ask to retire after thirty years to bring in younger people.

But once I got down there to Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, they call it the rust belt, one town we shot in had 70% unemployment and there were lots of very depressed areas and that was when it really hit home.

Suddenly it was like ‘Ok we are not just running around on trains this is serious business’ we had a casting call for fifty extras, we needed fifty men, two thousand turned up - so that was the reality of and I think that we felt more responsibility in representing these folks, not just in a positive light, but telling their story that times are tough.

Unstoppable is the Oscar winners fifth collaboration with Scott, their first movie since The Taking of Pelham 123, and the movie also stars Star Trek actor Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson.

Washington has already enjoyed box office success this year as he starred in The Book of Eli in early 2010. The actor has also been linked to Safe House.

Unstoppable is released 26th November.
