Controversy surrounds David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises as British film censors are allowing it to be screened without any cuts. The film, which is released on Friday, has been labelled one of the most violent movies of recent years and has been given an 18 certificate.Eastern Promises was premiered at the 51st British Film Festival last week and contained violent scenes including the repeated twisting of a knife in a man's eye and graphic detail of throats being cut which led to members of the audience turning away from the screen. But the Board of Film Classification (BBFC) introduced a new policy where they no longer remove violent scenes from movies, unless any rape scenes are of an explicit nature, and they are standing by their decision. It's not the first time that director David Cronenberg has caused controversy with one of his movies. His 1997 film Crash, which was about a sexual fetish that involved car crashes was widely banned in this country.Eastern Promises stars Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen and King Kong star Naomi Watts focuses in the Russian mafia in London.Helen Earnshaw
