Daniel Radcliffe admits that he took on the stage role of Equus to separate himself from Harry Potter before the end of the series.

The actor leaves the character behind next summer, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been split into two movies, but was keen to show off his acting ability before the series came to a close.

Speaking to Total Film the actor said: "We knew it was important to start the process of separation while the 'Potter' films were going on rather than trying to branch out at the end and expect people to see me as something else."

And while Radcliffe is now taking on a string of differnt roles he believes that he will always be associated with the boy wizard.

"'Harry Potter' is responsible for every opportunity I'll get for the rest of my life and I'm going to be forever grateful.

"I may occasionally get annoyed by a drunk person in the street shouting, 'Harry!' at me in the street but on the whole it's not an issue. And it's part of my job - it's what I signed up for."

Radcliffe is currently filming the big screen adaptation of Susan Hill's novel The Woman In Black, which will be directed by James Watkins.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is released 19th November.
