Daniel Craig has revealed that he was impressed with Rooney Mara when he read with her for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Craig and Mara take over the roles of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s interpretation of Stieg Larsson’s popular novel.

And Craig admits that he was stunned by how far Mara went into the character so early on in the process of the movie:

Speaking to Total Film the actor said: "I went to read with Rooney in Los Angeles, what feels like another lifetime ago, and I was incredibly impressed by how far she was into the character at that stage.

"I actually thought that’s who Rooney was, but thankfully it’s not."

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo rounds off a busy autumn for Craig as he has already starred in Dream House and lent his voice to The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2011 and could well feature during the awards season.

And Craig will be returning as 007 and he is currently filming Skyfall, his third outing as James Bond - which will be directed by Sam Mendes.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is released 26th December.
