Colin Firth believes that he will never escape the role of Mr Darcy.
It was that role in Pride and Prejudice, an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel for the BBC, that shot him to fame back in 1995.
Despite the actor's success in recent years with the likes of Mamma Mia, Bridget Jones' Diary and The English Patient he has never been able to leave Mr Darcy behind.
Speaking to Contactmusic the actor said: "I'm not remotely interested in Pride and Prejudice in any way and haven't watched it since doing it.
"But the word Darcy is like a phantom that won't leave me alone, like a school nickname that sticks with you for years afterwards.
"It was as if I hadn't existed before Pride and Prejudice. I was hailed as a new arrival even though I'd arrived ten years earlier."
But the British actor finds himself a first time Oscar nominee for his current role in A Single Man.
Nominated for Best Actor he faces tough competition from Jeff Bridges, Jeremy Renner, Morgan Freeman and George Clooney.
