Colin Firth admits that he is happy to be remembered as Mr Darcy.

Firth was the toast of Hollywood on Sunday evening as he picked up the Best Actor Oscar for his role as King George VI in The King's Speech.

It was only the second Oscar nod of his career - the first coming twelve months ago for A Single Man.

Despite the huge success he has received with the Tom Hooper movie Firth admits that he will always be synonymous with the character of Mr Darcy.

Speaking to The Telegraph the actor said: "No, I think Mr Darcy will be alive and well for the rest of my life. Mr Darcy will be put to rest when he is buried at a crossroads at midnight with a stake through his heart.

"I don't see that happening any time soon, and actually I'd be rather sad to see him go.

"There's a bit of a misperception that I'm disgruntled about the Darcy thing and I'm not remotely bothered by it.

"I would hate to see that tag leave me so I'm very happy for it to follow me around as long as people want it to do so."

The King's Speech walked away with four Oscars at the weekend, including Best Picture, Best Director for Hooper and Best Original Screenplay.

And the actor looks set to be very busy over the coming months with a whole host of projects in the pipeline.

He has already completed work on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and is set to work on Gambit, Seconds of Pleasure and Stoker.
