Christopher Nolan has been asked to oversee the next Superman movie, according to reports.

Nolan's two superhero outings have been massive box office hits, breathing new life into the franchise and attracting the attention of Warner Bros studio chiefs, who were disappointed with 2006 Man of Steel film Superman Returns.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Bryan Singer will stay on as director, but Nolan has been asked to serve as "godfather" on the new sequel and oversee production.

An insider tells the site, "We know what we don't want to do. But we don't know what we want to do. We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it right this time.

"Warner Bros doesn't have a handle yet on it... they need to hear a great story that makes sense."

Superman star Brandon Routh is expected to reprise his role in the sequel - which currently has no release date.

It was revealed earlier this week that a script for a third Batman movie was being worked on by David Goyer but Nolan's role in the possible up coming project is still unknown.

He is back in the director's chair later this year when he teams up with Leonardo DiCaprio for Inception.
