It has been revealed that Christopher Nolan will not be returning to direct a third batman movie.
The filmmaker, who revitalised the superhero series, has always voiced his concern about following up The Dark Knight after it's massive box office success last summer.
The film, which saw Christian Bale return as Bruce Wayne, broke through the $1 billion barrier and join Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the only four films to have achieved this.
Movie Hole has reported that the filmmaker was so shaken by the death of Heath Ledger in January 2008 that The Dark Knight would be his last time in the director's chair on this franchise.
Ledger passed away before seeing the completed movie. However is performance received rave reviews and he dominated the awards circuit winning the Best Supporting Actor gongs at the Baftas, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and of course the Oscars.
Whether another director will come in and take over the reigns has yet to be announced, but there has been no statement from Nolan himself.
Nolan is currently working on science fiction film Inception which sees him work with actor Michael Caine for a fourth time. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page.
