Christopher Nolan has hinted that The Dark Knight Rises is very much about consequences.

The director brings his Batman franchise to a close this month with the third and final movie that is set years after The Dark Knight.

And while he hinted on an element of the movie he didn't give too much away.

Speaking to MTV News the filmmaker said: "There's a lot about being true to where we left things and where we left the characters at the end of The Dark Knight.

"[We really tried] to push that forward, saying, 'Okay, where would that really go if we carried that story on?'"

"Yeah, in a way," he said when asked if pain could be considered a motif for the film. "Or consequences. There's a lot about the consequences of actions [in The Dark Knight Rises]."

This is the first Batman movie from Nolan in four years, The Dark Knight was released back in 2008 and was a billion dollar success at the box office.

The movie sees him reunite with Christian Bale, who is back as Bruce Wayne, while Tom Hardy is just one of the new faces on the cast list as Bane.

The Dark Knight Rises is released 20th July.
