Chris Evans has described his workouts for Captain America: The First Avenger as 'gruelling' and 'brutal'.

The actor teamed up with trainer Simon Waterson - who worked with Daniel Craig before Casino Royale - as he got in shape to take on the role of Steve Rogers in the latest Marvel big screen adaptation.

Speaking to Men's Health the actor said: "It was gruelling. It was brutal and I'd find any excuse possible not to go. But I had to do it. The gym wasn't anything too special.

"We would take two muscle groups, whether it was chest and back or biceps and triceps and we would just destroy those muscles, literally, for about two hours.

"Then we'd cool down with core and abs. I had no idea there were so many ways you could burn yourself out."

And while Evans was in great shape for the movie he admits that the heavy training did cause him some issues.

"I don't think my body is supposed to be as big as it got for Captain America," he admitted. "There was a strain on some joints.

"After a month and a half of training I found my right shoulder would click and my left pec would hurt."

Captain America: The First Avenger is the third Marvel Comic movie to hit the big screen this summer with Thor and X-Men: First Class enjoying both critical and commercial success.

The movie sees Evans team up with an all star cast that includes Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Dominic Cooper, Hugo Weaving and Hayley Atwell.

Evans is currently reprising the role for The Avengers - which is currently filming.

Captain America: The First Avenger is released 29th July.
