Channing Tatum has revealed that he would like to take on more roles and characters with depth.

The actor is back on the big screen this week in Kevin McDonald's movie The Eagle, which also stars Jamie Bell.

The historical epic is an big screen adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff's novel The Eagle of the Ninth. And while Tatum does enjoy the more action roles he does want to take on more challenging characters.

Speaking to The Guardian the actor said: "I do want to play characters with more depth. I'm really ready to become unrecognisable. But I know that at the moment that is not why people hire me.

"If they're looking for a stereotypical red-blooded all-American male, they'll come to me. So you have to start making those decisions: who are you going to be? Do I say yes to those roles, and carry on working but not necessarily grow?

"Then again, look at someone like Christian Bale. He's done extraordinarily well in some action roles because of the way he approaches them. I hope I have it in me to be that good."

And 2011 is going to be a busy year for the actor as he has already finished work on Haywire, Ten Year and The Vow.

Love and Honour and 21 Jump Street are also in the pipeline.

The Eagle is released 23rd March.
