Indian cultural leaders are applauding a decision by the country's film officials to halt a new Cate Blanchett movie so they can scrutinise the script.

The Oscar winner will reportedly play Lady Mountbatten in the film, Indian Summer, about the Brit's alleged affair with India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The project, partly based on a memoir by Mountbatten's daughter Pamela, is said to be "delicate" by top Indian officials, who want to check the script to make sure it's respectful towards the wife of the former Indian Viceroy.

Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed has welcomed the caution, telling WENN, "While we welcome Hollywood attempts to show India’s history on the big screen, we'd urge the filmmakers to portray India’s historical events authentically.

"We'd ask them not to re-imagine India’s history just for mercantile greed."

The film is set to be released in 2011.
