Casey Affleck admits that he was shocked by the level of violence in his new movie The Killer Inside Me.
The movie sees Affleck working with filmmaker Michael Winterbottom on a big screen adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel of the same name.
Chatting to MSN Affleck said: "I definitely still found it shocking, because especially with Michael, because he shoots from 20 different angles and you really have no idea how it's going to look - and a scene can be totally different from anything you've shot.
"You can take a scene and cut it up, put it in different places," he said. "So yeah, of course I was still shocked when I watched the violence on screen."
The movie follows a West Texas sheriff (Affleck) and his downward spiral from a boring small-town cop into a ruthless, sociopathic murderer.
The movie, which also stars Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson, was heavily criticised at the Cannes Film Festival for the levels of violence and Affleck admits that he is not surprised by that reaction.
"I wasn't too surprised. It seems like a knee-jerk reaction of righteousness indignation about nothing really.
"You get that at film festivals, where the responses are always more extreme, in either direction, both positive and negative."
The Killer Inside Me is out now.
