Carey Mulligan has revealed that she auditioned three times for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
The British actress was one of a string of stars who were believed to be in the running for the role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's American adaptation of Steig Larsson's novel.
The role eventually went to Rooney Mara.
Speaking to The Radio Times the actress said: "I auditioned for it three times - I dyed my hair black, got fake nose rings and covered my face in black make-up, so yeah, I would have loved that part."
Despite losing out on the role of Lisbeth the actress will be back on the big screen this week with her new movie Never Let Me Go, which sees her star alongside Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield.
But the actress admits that is very picky about the parts that she takes on.
"I was trying to find something where I'd be freaked out and a bit nervous about doing it. I want that challenge."
The actress has also completed work on Drive.
Never Let Me Go is released 11th February.
