Carey Mulligan believes that she may miss out on the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady to Keira Knightley.
Both Oscar nominated actresses have been linked to the part over the last twelve months, Mulligan becoming a strong contender after her success with An Education.
Emma Thompson is penning the script and hinted, whilst promoting Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, that Mulligan was a board the project.
However whilst in Cannes this week the British star admits that she has no idea what is happening and feels that she may not get the part.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival Mulligan said:"I think we're all aware that we're all reading the same things.
"She's [Keira] eons higher up than I am. She's much higher. There's a chain of people that get offers before you do, and she's much higher in that chain."
"So I kind of think that if she rejects it, then I might get it. You never really know where you stand.
"Your agent doesn't ring-a-ding and go, 'Well, five people turned it down, so what do you think?'"
She is back on the big screen this September as she joins an all star cast of Michael Douglas, Josh Brolin and Shia LaBeouf on Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
