Nicholas Cage has revealed that Jon Turteltaub was the only director he had in mind to direct The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Cage takes on the central role as wizard Balthazar Blake in Jerry Bruckheimer’s movie that is influenced by the Mickey Mouse section of Fantasia.

When Cage joined the project there was no director in place and the Oscar winner admits that he believed only Turteltaub would do.

Speaking to Total Film Cage said: “I went after Jon because knew that he would get the humour. It’s a very funny movie.

“You don’t want to take yourselves too seriously when you’re dealing with this kind of subject matte, especially in the summer, which is all about people going to the movie theatre and enjoying themselves, taking their mind off their problems.

“It’s maybe a little out of the box for Jon, perhaps not in his comfort zone, but Hunter S Thompson had a good quote. He said: ‘When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.’ So I’m like ‘Come on Jon, let’s go.’”

The movie reunites Cage with his National Treasure filmmaker and sees him star alongside Alfred Molina, Jay Baruchel and Monica Bellucci.

It’s already been a busy year for Cage with Bad Lieutenant and Lick Ass enjoying box office success and with Season of the Witch on the way that success looks set to continue.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is released 11th August.
