Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds have emerged as favourites to play Marshall Matt Dillon in a movie remake of hit TV western Gunsmoke.
Both stars are in talks for the role made famous by James Arness on the small screen, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The character, who kept the law in Dodge City, became a radio staple in America before Arness gave Dillon a face on TV in the 1960s. He played the role for 20 years.
Since his Oscar winning turn in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last year Brad Pitt has made just one onscreen appearance in Inglourious Basterds.
The movie saw him work alongside Quentin Tarantino for the first time and the movie has been nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars.
However he has The Tree of Life, The Lost City of Z and MegaMind all in pre-production.
Reynolds on the other hand has been a very busy boy mixing and mtaching his roles throughout 2009.
First it was the big budget blockbuster with X-Men Origins: Wolverine before moving back to comedy for The Proposal before rounding off the year with indie movie Adventureland.
And 2010 looks set to be just as busy with Green Lantern and a Deadpool project in the pipeline.
