Beverly Hills Chihuahua has remained at the top of the American box office for a second week despite tough competition from horror flick Quarantine and thriller Body of Lies.

Grossing a further $17.5 million the Walt Disney comedy, and surprise box office smash, held of nearest competition Quarantine which grossed just over $14 million in it's opening weekend.

The film follows television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station.

After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units

They soon learn that a woman living in the building has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape with the news crew in tow, only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building.

Not even the combination of Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe could end Beverly Hills Chihuahua's reign as Body of Lies, a film about espionage during the Iraq war could only manage third spot.

Eagle Eye dropped two places to number four while Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist also fell two places rounding off the top five.

Other new entries in the chart included The Express, based on the life of college football hero Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy, which opened at number six and the City of Ember which failed to spark opening at ten.
