Ben Kingsley has revealed that working with Martin Scorsese was like 'jumping into the deep end'
The Oscar winning pair team up for the first time on Scorsese's latest project Shutter Island, an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel.
In an interview with the press Association the actor said: "Given it is our first together, it's wonderful to jump in the deep end - there is no shallow end with Martin but to jump in the deep end is a privilege because you sink or swim."
"Martin Scorsese trusted I could swim, which is great and having heard his persuasive professional voice on the phone I read the script with great delight. I know he directs with love. That is the process."
And while he was on set the actor, who won his Oscar back in 1983 for his role as Gandhi, was able to observe the working relationship between Scorsese and his leading man Leonardo DiCaprio, this is their fourth project together.
"As another member of the cast, observing this great longevity of a working relationship, they never for a second excluded.
"Every debate on the set between Martin and Leonardo was shared, there was no shorthand, there was no whispering in corners.
"Every single person on the set gets the benefit of this working relationship so it's continually refreshed.
"You don't feel that it's a private language, which I think given the history of the relationship is quite generous and remarkable. It lifted the whole set."
Shutter Island is released 12th March.
