James Cameron can now boast the top two grossing films of all time - only his Titanic has made more at the box office than new movie Avatar.
The sci-fi epic has made over $1.14 billion globally since its release in December (09), relegating former number two blockbuster, The Lord of the Rings:
Return of the King, to third on the all-time money-making list.
Avatar is only the fifth film to make more than $1 billion at the box office. Cameron's Titanic made $1.8 billion.
The film has dominated the box office since it’s release in December and is the quickest film in history to break the $1billion barrier.
The last movie to achieve the same feat was Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight which reached this milestone when it was re-released in America at the beginning of 2009.
The latest box office news comes as the filmmaker celebrates a nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film at the Directors Guild Awards.
