Andy Serkis believes that the Academy Awards should not introduce an award that recognises actors who use CGI in their performances.
The debate has been sparked after Zoe Saldana was overlooked by the Oscars for her performance in Avatar.
Andy Serkis made his name playing Gollum and while he only appeared in Return of the King without the aid of CGI the actor used motion capture to produce all of the characters movements throughout the trilogy.
Speaking to the BBC the Bafta nominated actor said: It's a very interesting debate. The industry is going to be using performance-capture more and more in films.
"Personally, I've never believed there should be a separate category because the essence of the performance is pure acting. It's ultimately whether whoever's voting for the awards thinks the performance is a genuinely moving character.
"I don't really think there should a special acting in a digital realm award or anything. From an acting standpoint, it's the same."
While no official statement has yet been made Serkis is expected to return to the character of Gollum for The Hobbit.
