TOP CONTENDER: The Artist

TOP CONTENDER: The Artist

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the winners of its annual award yesterday.

The non-profit organisation chose ten 'movies of the year' and ten 'television programmes of the year', amongst which were Bridesmaids, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Midnight in Paris, Hugo, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Parks and Recreation and Modern Family.

The AFI also gave special awards to the Harry Potter series and the black and white silent movie, The Artist, despite the fact that it only usually honours American productions.

Three other bodies revealed the winners of their own awards on Sunday 11 December as well, including New York Film Critics Online, The Boston Society of Film Critics and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

The BSFC and NYFCO also recognised The Artist by presenting it with ‘best picture’, as well as rewarding Melissa McCarthy with ‘best supporting actress’ for her role in Bridesmaids. Both films failed to grace the Los Angeles Film Critics list though.

These announcements come just days before the nominations are revealed for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards and the 69th Golden Globe Awards.
