Alice in Wonderland is still America's top film for a third week after making $34.5 (£21.6 million) over the weekend (19-21Mar10).
The film, based loosely on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass novels, has now made over $565 million at the global box office since its release.
Family film Diary of a Wimpy Kid stunned film experts by opening in second place - ahead of Jennifer Aniston comedy The Bounty Hunter and Jude Law's new movie Repo Men.
Wimpy Kid, which chronicles the problems of an under-sized schoolboy, opened with $21.8 million (£13.6 million) - a million more that The Bounty Hunter.
There was a third new entry inside the top five in the form of Repo Man, which was in at number four.
The movie sees Jude Law and Forest Whitaker return to the big screen for this science fiction, action movie.
There was a two place drop for She's Out of My League while Green Zone dropped four places to number six.
There was also a three place drop for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, moving from four to seven, while Avatar dropped just a single place to this week's eight.
This week's biggest faller came in the form of Remember Me, the latest movie from Robert Pattinson, which dropped five places from last week's five to number ten.
