Aaron Eckhart has reportedly joined Johnny Depp in the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Eckhart is in talks to take on the role of wealthy landowner Sanderson who introduces struggling journalist Paul Kemp, to be played by Depp, to a better standard of living.
Richard Jenkins is also rumoured to be on board as Lotterman, the man who oversees the newspaper Paul works on. And Amber Heard is already on the cast list as Chenault, the girlfriend of another journalist.
The Rum Diaries is loosely based on Thompson's experiences working as a freelance journalist in Puerto Rico in the fifties and was released in 1998.
The project has faced problems ever since it went into production as Johnny Depp, who played Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, tried to get the movie made.
Aaron Eckhart enjoyed major success last summer with his role as Harvey Dent/ Two Face in The Dark Knight, with rumours of a return in the sequel. Jenkins has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Visitor.
Filming is to begin on March 30 in Puerto Rico.
