A Nightmare on Elm Street has topped the U.S. box office, taking $32.2 million in it's opening weekend.

The Samuel Bayer movie is a remake of the Wes Craven classic and sees Jackie Earle Haley take over the lead role of Freddy Krueger.

A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond; they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who hunts them in their dreams.

As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another... but when they sleep, there is no escape.

How o Train Your Dragon slipped down one place to number two while comedy Date Night held onto third spot.

Jennifer Lopez's new movie The Back-Up Plan was down two places at number four while Furry Vengeance was the second new entry inside the top five.

There was a two place drop for The Losers, down from four to six, while there was also a one place drop for Clash of the Titans.

This week's biggest faller came in the form of Matthew Vaughn's superhero movie Kick Ass which fell three places from five to eight.
