Zac Efron has proved that he can be king of the box office without High School Musical and he new comedy 17 Again dominated the U.S box office.
The heartthrob stars alongside Matthew Perry the age-defying comedy in which a magical transformation finds Mike reliving his past in the present day as a 17-year-old in the same high school he attended 20 years ago.
The film grossed over $24 million in the opening weekend easily beating political thriller State of Play into number two.
Starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Helen Mirren State of Play is an adaptation of the hit BBC series and grossed a healthy $14 million to open at number two.
Moster Vs Aliens held onto the number three while last week's number one Hannah Montana: The Movie fell three places to number four after just one week at the top spot.
And while Fast and Furious rounded off the top five, falling three places from last week's tow, there was just one more new entry inside the top ten in the form of Jason Statham's Crank 2: High Voltage, which opened at number six.
