Jack O'Connell

Jack O'Connell

The EE Bafta Rising Star Award is always one of the most exciting Bafta categories as it is the only one that is voted for by the general public.

This year five more great young actors are in the running and are looking to follow in the footsteps of formers winners such as Will Poulter, Juno Temple, Tom Hardy, and Noel Clarke.

We take a closer look at the nominees and the movies that have grabbed everyone's attention over the last twelve months.

- Jack O'Connell

Jack O'Connell has made a huge splash in 2014 and is one of the most exciting your British actors around at the moment.

He grabbed everyone's attention with Starred Up at the beginning of the year, as he took on the central role in the hard-hitting prison drama.

O’Connell also received critical acclaim for his punchy portrayal of Private Gary Hook in ‘71, for which he was nominated for a British Independent Film Award. The thriller, based on the troubles in Belfast, was first in competition at the Berlin Film Festival before being screened in Toronto.

Most recently, O'Connell teamed up with director Angelina Jolie for biopic movie Unbroken. The movie told the story of Olympian turned prisoner of war Louis Zamperini and O'Connell took on the role of Zamperini in the film.

Starred Up, '71 and Unbroken have brought O'Connell a hat trick of acclaim in 2014 and he went on to win Breakthrough Performance at the National Board of Review. He will be back on the big screen later this year with new film Tulip Fever,

- Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the other Brit actor who is in the running for the Rising Star Award this year, having made her major breakthrough with Belle this summer.

Mbatha-Raw is no stranger to the world of acting with films such as Larry Crowne and TV series Touch and Undercovers already under her belt, but 2014 was the year where she really made a name for herself.

The role of Dido Belle has proved to be a very pivotal one in her career as it saw her nominated for Most Promising Newcomer at last year's British Independent Film Awards.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of her over the next twelve months as she has completed work on Beyond the Lights, Jupiter Ascending, and The Whole Truth.

She is currently filming a film about head injuries in the NFL, which will see star alongside Will Smith and Alec Baldwin while Peter Landesman is in the director's chair.

- Miles Teller

Miles Teller grabbed my attention at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival when he starred in The Spectacular Now, and he has gone on to bigger and better things in the last twelve months.

In 2014, we saw him mix and match his roles with Divergent, That Awkward Moment, and Two Night Stand hitting the big screen... but it is his upcoming performance in Whiplash that really does have the critics raving.

Whiplash premiered at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of last year where it was met with great reviews - it really has been the jewel of the festival circuit since then.

Whiplash is set to be the film that changes the course of Teller's career and is already one of the most praised movies of 2015. We are also going to be seeing him return as Peter in Insurgent and take over the role of Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four.

It is another year of mixing roles and movie genres for Teller, and he really is going to have an even bigger 2015 - he is one of the American actors to keep an eye on for the rest of this year.

- Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley has been a rising star ever since she starred alongside George Clooney in The Descendants. Since then, she really has seen her star rocket with Divergent and The Fault In Our Stars under her belt in 2014.

Woodley took on central roles of Tris and Hazel as Divergent and The Fault In Our Stars - both popular young adult novels - were adapted for the big screen.

Woodley has received critical acclaim for her tragic portrayal of a young cancer patient in the witty yet heart breaking love story The Fault in our Stars - which went on to be one of the biggest successes of the summer.

Woodley will return to the role of Tris Prior this year with the release of Insurgent - the second film in the Divergent series. She has also completed work on White Bird in a Blizzard and has been linked to an Oliver Stone project.

- Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie earned her place among Hollywood’s finest for her recent breakthrough role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street in which she stars as the female lead opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, and alongside other acting heavyweights including Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill and Rob Reiner.

The Wolf of Wall Street was the only big screen outing for Robbie in 2014, but her 2015 is packed with movies that I can't wait to see.

She has teamed up with Will Smith for Focus, and has also completed work on Z for Zachariah and Suite française. She is set to take on the role of Jane Porter in a new interpretation of Tarzan - a movie that she is currently filming.

She is also part of the all-stat cast of Suicide Squad, which will begin filming in April. The movie is based on the DC Comic of the same name and will also star Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis.

The EE Rising Star Award is the only award at the EE British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the public. Voting is now open at ee.co.uk/BAFTA. The winner will be announced at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 8th February 2015.
