Marvel Studios’ past 13 years have been sensational, with Iron Man (2008) starting up the Infinity Saga, and Avengers: Endgame (2019) ending it, with the Avengers and many other characters putting an end to Thanos (Josh Brolin) once and for all; but this was only just the beginning.
Over the next two or three years, Marvel will (most likely) be releasing a whopping 14 movies! We will be seeing brand new characters never before seen on the big screen, along with a continuation of some of our beloved characters’ stories.
Here is a list of some Marvel films that will hopefully be releasing within the next few years, with the majority of planned movies set to release before the end of 2023!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings – September 3rd, 2021
This movie is among some of the most highly-anticipated releases, as not only will we be venturing into the world of martial arts with a new character, but the film isr also expected to correct the issues with Iron Man 3 (2013) villain the Mandarin, and The Ten Rings organisation.
The Ten Rings have been a subtle presence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its beginning, so it will be interesting to see them in more detail.
The trailer for this movie was exceptional, as it showed an underwater creature who could very well be Fin Fang Foom, an extra-terrestrial being in the form of a dragon, and an exciting fight between Abomination and what appears to be Wong (Benedict Wong) from Doctor Strange (2016), among other things.
This film promises new characters, a long-forgotten character, corrections to past mistakes, and martial arts: it’s no wonder fans have already marked the date on their calendars.
Eternals – November 5th, 2021
Eternals is a film that many people are on the fence about, as while it looks intriguing, other more exciting projects seem to be overshadowing the super-powered beings and their story.
The Eternals’ story will span thousands of years, showing various parts of human history. All this time, though, they remained in the shadows, hidden from the wars and adversity of the planet; even during events from The Avengers movies.
Now, however, it seems that they will have to face an enemy of their own: the Deviants. The movie boasts an all star cast, with Salma Hayek, Kit Harrington, Angelina Jolie and more.
Spider-Man: No Way Home – December 17th, 2021
The third and possibly final instalment in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise will release this holiday season, and words cannot describe how excited fans (and us!) are for this chaotic adventure!
This movie is set to be a multiverse film, bringing in former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, and the first actor to play Spider-Man on the big screen, Tobey Maguire. Without Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) to look our for Peter Parker (Holland), it seems Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be filling in as the mentor for the young hero.
We will be seeing Alfred Molina return as Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx coming back as Electro, which is incredible as it cements the idea of a multiverse and begs the question: who else will return?
With no plot details to discuss, all we can do it wait for a trailer to see just what this new Spider-Man film has in store for us. The MCU is changing in so many wonderful ways, and we can’t wait to see how this movie ties in to the madness that is to come.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness March 25th, 2022 (This section includes spoilers for Loki)
Moving into next year (2022), the MCU will release one of the most exciting and wonderfully confusing films, which poses a lot of interesting questions from the fans.
Six years after the first film, a sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange, the film which introduced Benedict Cumberbatch into the MCU. With the end of Disney+ series Loki giving way to the multiverse, branches are splitting off and creating chaos in the universe.
While Marvel have released nothing in the way of plot details yet, we can make an educated guess that the sequel will attempt to fix the issues caused in Loki, and bring the timeline back together.
Thor: Love and Thunder – May 6th, 2022
The fourth movie in the Thor branch of Marvel films sees Chris Hemsworth take on the role of God of Thunder once again; with some actors leaving the MCU, it’s great to hear that Hemsworth isn’t done with the franchise just yet.
This project will also see the return of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who is said to be playing Mighty Thor, the female version of the God, as she was seen wielding Mjolnir at a comic-con event.
Thor and Jane won’t be the only heroes in this story; Avengers: Endgame saw the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with Thor, which leads us to wonder what events may follow.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – July 8th, 2022
The sequel to 2018’s Black Panther is one of the most talked about projects, as the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, who played the titular role, meant that the studio had some decisions to make regarding casting.
It is rumoured that T’Challa’s (Boseman) role within the MCU will be limited, if non-existent, off-camera. The studio has decided not to re-cast the role, and leave T’Challa’s success to Boseman. Everyone is curious to see how Marvel handle this, as many fans are devastated that the first ever Black-led superhero film will not have T’Challa in the spotlight anymore.
In regard to the plot, there are talks of Wakanda facing a war with the people of Atlantis, who want the vibranium hidden in the technologically advanced African country. Namor is said to appear as a gateway of sorts into Atlantis; nothing is set in stone yet, though.
Other films set to release
As well as the aforementioned films, we also have these films on the way: The Marvels (November 11th, 2022), Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (February 17th, 2023), Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 (May 5th, 2023), Fantastic Four (potentially 2023), Blade (potentially 2023), Deadpool 3, and Captain America 4.
While these projects aren't set in stone, we hope that we get to see them all sooner rather than later.
Marvel is definitely kicking it up a notch by bringing in new characters, new stories, and even Deadpool and the Fantastic Four to the mix: it’s safe to say we’re more than excited for the next few years!
