There may be a whole host of new director's on the block in Hollywood but it is the older guys who have shown them all how it's done when it comes to the Oscars.
Yes when the Best Director nominations were read out on Tuesday, Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick and Woody Allen are set to do battle for the biggest prize in movies.
Alexander Payne and Michel Hazanavicius make up the Best Director category and it looks like it is going to be a tough category.
Martin Scorsese has been nominated for Hugo, which has the most nods with eleven, could he add to his Golden Globe win?
It's fair to say that Scorsese has been overlooked too many times by the Academy and it's a travesty that he only has one Best Director Oscar.
So bearing this in mind could the popular Scorsese win? He is perhaps the most likely to challenge the young directors in the category.
Woody Allen and Terrence Malick are both in with a shout for Midnight In Paris and Tree of Life but it is unlikely that they will get a win.
Both movies have been a huge hit with the critics; Midnight In Paris seems to have charmed everyone while Tree of Life was a huge hit at the Cannes Film festival where is won the Palme D'Or.
It's great to see these iconic filmmakers still putting our great work and being recognised for it.
All the talk has been about The Descendants and The Artist, with Alexander Payne and Michel Hazanavicius being the names on everyone's lips.
And while everyone believes that a vast majority of the big categories are going to be contested by these two movies Scorsese could well spoil the party!!
