Leonardo DiCaprio

Our look at some of the best modern day actor/director partnerships continues as we celebrate the return of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski for The Lone Ranger.

And one of the partnerships that has been churning out fantastic films in recent years is Director Martin Scorsese and leading man Leonardo DiCaprio.

So far the duo have made four movies together, and there is a fifth on the horizon at the beginning of 2014.

It was DiCaprio's partnership with Scorsese that saw the actor go from pin-up to Hollywood heavyweight.

Gangs of New York was to be their first project together back in 2003, a movie that was inspired by Herbert Asbury's 1928 non-fiction book of the same name.

The movie follows Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) who returns to New York in 1863 to avenge the murder of his father by Bill The Butcher (played by Daniel Day Lewis).

Gangs of New York was a critical hit and went on to be nominated for ten Oscars; including Best Picture and Best Director for Scorsese.

Scorsese and DiCaprio reunited in 2005 for The Aviator, which was a biopic movie about director and aviator Howard Hughes.

The movie saw DiCaprio take on the role of Hughes in what was one of the best performances of his career.

DiCaprio picked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination while Scorsese and the film was also recognised.

The movie did win five gongs, including Best Supporting Actress of Cate Blanchett, but DiCaprio, Scorsese and the movie itself did miss out.

The Departed swiftly followed as the pair tackled the crime thriller; which was a remake of the Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs.

Scorsese has always excelled in this genre, and The Departed was another gangster/crime hit.

DiCaprio played Billy Costigan, an undercover cop, in what was one of the best movies of the year.

The Departed went on to win Best Picture while Scorsese FINALLY got his hands on a Best Director Oscar.

An adaptation of Dennis Lehane novel Shutter Island was next for the duo in 2010; in what was their last project together.

But do not fear DiCaprio/Scorsese fans as The Wolf of Wall Street will see them reunite once again.

The movie is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.

DiCaprio will take on the role of Belfort while Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey are also on the cast list.

The Lone Ranger is released 9th August.
