12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave is already being tipped as one of the movies of 2014, and we haven’t seen the back of 2013 yet.

I have already had the chance to see this movie and all the hype surrounding it is totally justified as it is one of the most powerful and raw movies that I have witnessed in a very long time.

Steve McQueen is a director who has been whipping up a storm for quite some time with the likes of Hunger and Shame under his belt, however, 12 Years A Slave is the movie that is really going to put him on the map.

12 Years A Slave is a movie that I urge you to see in the new year, and we have a couple of great new clips for you to check out and wet your appetite:

The movie is based on the memoir by Solomon Northup, a man tricked into slavery, and Chiwetel Ejiofor takes on the central role in the film.

Ejiofor is an actor who has enjoyed plenty of film and TV success during his acting career, but 12 Years A Slave is set to be the defining role and film of his career to date. He has already picked up a Golden Globe nomination for his work, and he looks certain to be in the Oscar running when the nominations are announced.

The British actor leads an all-star cast as Michael Fassbender, Sarah Paulson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti are also on board. The film will also introduce us to Lupita Nyong’o as she makes her big screen debut with the film.

In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.

In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Pitt) forever alters his life.

12 Years a Slave is by no means an easy watch, but is one of those movies that absolutely has to be seen - it is nothing short of a masterpiece.

12 Years A Slave is released 10th January 2014.
